Freedom on Four Wheels – Traveling by Motorhome

Freedom, nature, and comfort combined: With a motorhome, you discover the world at your own pace. Whether it’s a mountain panorama in the morning or the sound of the ocean in the evening – on the road, you decide where your next dream spot will be. Start your four-wheeled adventure now.

Freedom on Four Wheels – Traveling by Motorhome

Imagine opening the door of your motorhome in the morning and breathing in the fresh mountain air – or listening to the gentle sound of waves right in front of your campsite. No fixed schedules, no rigid routes. With your home on wheels, you experience your holiday – and the country you’re exploring – in a completely different way: a touch of adventure, but with comfort.

When traveling by motorhome, the journey itself often becomes the destination: a spontaneous lunch break at a deep-blue shimmering lake, paired with a meal prepared in your own kitchen, can suddenly become the highlight of the day.

The reasons why holidays on four wheels are so popular are obvious:

  • No daily packing and unpacking or constant hotel check-ins and check-outs

  • Your home and everything you need is always with you

  • Overnight stays surrounded by nature or on picturesque campgrounds

  • Meeting like-minded travelers along the way

  • The right vehicle model for every need

But even for motorhome holidays, good preparation is essential for an unforgettable trip. A few tips can make planning easier:

Book Your Motorhome Early

Motorhome holidays are becoming increasingly popular not only in Switzerland and Europe, but also in far-flung destinations like Canada, the USA, Australia, and Southern Africa. Especially during peak travel seasons (North America from mid-June to August, Australia from December to February, and Namibia from June to October), availability can become limited – making early booking highly recommended.

Because more and more locals are also traveling with their own motorhomes, demand for campsites in North America is especially high during the summer months. That’s why it’s best to reserve your preferred campsites in advance, usually easily done online. In Australia, depending on the region, wild camping is even permitted – a unique experience, enjoying the wilderness under a star-filled sky, far from civilization.

Plan Your Route Well

There is so much to see, no matter where in the world you’re traveling. It’s easy to plan a bit too much. However, driving long distances in a motorhome can be tiring. Therefore, it’s recommended to limit daily stages to 250–300 km. Always plan enough stops along the way – there is something to discover everywhere. Large campers and motorhomes are also less suitable for driving into cities.

Shopping

One of the great advantages of a motorhome holiday is that you don’t need to look for a restaurant to enjoy breakfast or dinner. However, even here, the fridge won’t fill itself. In many places, you’ll find small convenience stores that carry all the essentials – though often at higher prices. Larger supermarkets are more affordable and offer a full range of products – you can even find Swiss cheese. These bigger stores, however, are usually located in more populated areas; off the tourist trails, you’ll mostly come across small local shops. So it can be worthwhile to stock up on a few items in advance.

Equipment and Luggage

Motorhomes are generally very well equipped. They typically include bedding or sleeping bags, towels, cooking utensils, dishes, and even camping chairs and a table. Depending on the rental company, the equipment can be expanded or upgraded for an additional fee.

Storage space in a motorhome is very limited, and even in larger vehicles it can be challenging to stow luggage safely. For this reason, it’s recommended to bring a soft duffel bag and leave hard-shell suitcases at home. Although some rental stations can store your suitcase for a fee, this isn’t always possible due to space limitations – and it’s generally excluded for one-way rentals. If you run short on clean clothes, many campgrounds are equipped with laundromats where, with a few coins and a bit of time, you can get your laundry clean and fresh again.

Insider tip from Roland Leuenberger:

Hot Water Beach on the Coromandel Peninsula

Anyone traveling through New Zealand by camper shouldn’t miss a stop at Hot Water Beach. Here, naturally heated thermal water bubbles up directly beneath the sand. At low tide, both locals and visitors dig small pools with their hands – creating their own natural spa. It’s best to visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when the beach is quieter. You can usually rent a shovel at the campground or a nearby shop. Unforgettable!
